Hierarchy is the control of visual Information in an arrangement or presentation to imply importance. Hierarchy influences the order in which the human eye perceives what it sees.

In Design, hierarchy is used to:

  • Add Structure
  • Create visual organization
  • Create Direction
  • Add Emphasis
  • Help a viewer navigate and digest information easily.

Hierarchy is the principle of arranging elements to show their order of importance. It is a visual design principle which designers use to show the importance of each page/screen’s contents by manipulating these characteristics:

  • Size- Clients notice bigger components all the more without any problem.
  • Color- Bright colors normally pull in more consideration than muted ones.
  • Contrast- Dramatically contrasted colors are more attractive.
  • Alignment- Twisted components stand apart over adjusted ones.
  • Repetition- Repeating styles can recommend content is related.
  • Proximity- Closely placed elements appear to be connected.
  • Whitespace- More space around elements draws the eye towards them.
  • Texture and Style- Richer textures stand out over flat ones.

One of the most important functions of visual hierarchy is to help establish that all important focal point, giving viewers an entry point to start navigate your design and showing them where the most important information is.

Overall, remember your design’s hierarchy is the structure for arranging well chosen elements that must look and work best together so users can enjoy seamless experiences and forget they’re using an interface as a medium.
